How to apply for a Blue Badge in the UK

In short. Check whether your PIP, DLA or Child Disability Payment mobility award is automatic, then apply online with a photo and identity documents — England fees are up to £10, Scotland up to £20, Wales free, Northern Ireland £10.

Blue Badges are issued by local authorities, not DWP. Automatic awards follow specific mobility scores. This is not a parking-ticket appeal.

  • Recent passport-style photo
  • Proof of identity and address
  • PIP, DLA, ADP or Child Disability Payment award if you have one

The steps

  1. 01

    Check automatic qualification

    In England, 8 or more PIP points for moving around, or 10 points on planning-journeys descriptor E, are automatic. Higher-rate DLA or Child Disability Payment mobility also qualifies. Twelve points on planning journeys without descriptor E is not automatic. Read Blue Badge explained.

  2. 02

    Apply to the right nation

    England, Scotland and Wales start at GOV.UK. Northern Ireland uses nidirect. From April 2025 many English councils check PIP through DWP rather than asking you to upload the whole award letter.

  3. 03

    Upload photo and evidence

    Use a clear head-and-shoulders photo. If you are not automatic, describe walking distance, time, pain, breathlessness or risk, and attach clinic letters. Children under 3 can qualify if they always need bulky medical equipment or must stay near a vehicle for treatment.

  4. 04

    Wait for the decision and reapply before expiry

    Councils usually decide within 12 weeks. Badges last up to three years. If refused, ask the council to reconsider with extra evidence. Motability is a separate lease — Motability explained.

Common pitfalls

  • Assuming any PIP award means an automatic badge
  • Applying to DVLA — badges are a council product
  • Letting the badge expire without a new application

FAQ

Does enhanced PIP mobility always qualify?
No. Enhanced mobility can be awarded for planning journeys without meeting England’s automatic descriptors. Read your score sheet.
Is this the same as Motability?
No. Motability uses the mobility payment to lease a vehicle. Apply for a Blue Badge separately.
