Motability Scheme UK — who can lease a car from PIP or DLA mobility

Where a link is marked * or labelled Ad, it is a partner advertisement: we receive commission at no extra cost to you. Links without a * or Ad label earn us nothing. How we make money.

Quick answer: Motability lets you exchange a qualifying mobility award for a leased car, wheelchair accessible vehicle, scooter or powered wheelchair. You usually need the enhanced rate of PIP mobility, the higher rate of DLA or Child Disability Payment mobility, or War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement. The weekly mobility money is paid to Motability instead of you. Official scheme: www.motability.co.uk — DWP overview sits on www.gov.uk/pip/how-much-youll-get

The Motability Scheme is run by Motability Operations, not DWP. Eligibility follows your mobility component, not daily living. Advance payments and insurance are built into many leases. Who can join Motability?

Check your award letter. Standard-rate PIP mobility is not enough. Enhanced PIP mobility, higher-rate DLA mobility (including children from the qualifying age), Child Disability Payment higher-rate mobility, Adult Disability Payment enhanced mobility in Scotland, and some armed-forces mobility supplements qualify.

You apply through Motability with a DWP or Social Security Scotland eligibility letter. Dealers on the scheme handle the vehicle. This is not automatic when PIP is awarded — you still choose to join.

What does it cost?

The weekly mobility component is transferred to Motability. Smaller cars may need no extra; larger or wheelchair-accessible vehicles often need an advance payment from savings or a charity grant. Compare that with keeping the cash and buying or running a used car yourself.

Insurance and breakdown are typically in the lease. You still need to tell DVLA about notifiable medical conditions if you drive. DVLA medical conditions.
