Definition: A legally binding refusal of specified medical treatments, made in advance under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 in case you later lose capacity. Often called a 'living will'.
An ADRT only refuses treatment — it cannot demand treatment, refuse basic care (warmth, hygiene, oral food and water) or override compulsory treatment under the Mental Health Act.
To refuse life-sustaining treatment the ADRT must be in writing, signed and witnessed, and explicitly state that the refusal applies 'even if my life is at risk'. A later Health & Welfare LPA covering the same treatment overrides the ADRT.
