Am I eligible for a Blue Badge?

In short. You can get a Blue Badge if you have a qualifying mobility award or if your council agrees you have very considerable difficulty walking or are at serious risk. In England some PIP scores are automatic. The badge is issued by your council, not DWP.

Automatic awards follow specific mobility scores, not any PIP payment. Fees and automatic combinations differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Confirm with your council and GOV.UK.

You likely qualify if…

  • You score 8 or more PIP points for moving around, or 10 points on planning-journeys descriptor E, in England
  • You get higher-rate DLA mobility or Child Disability Payment higher-rate mobility (age rules apply)
  • You are registered severely sight impaired
  • Your council assesses that walking is very difficult or dangerous even if you are not automatic
  • A child under 3 always needs bulky medical equipment or must stay near a vehicle for treatment

You likely don't if…

  • You only have standard-rate PIP mobility without an automatic descriptor — the council still needs evidence
  • You want a Motability car rather than parking — that is a different scheme
  • You apply to DVLA — badges are a local-authority product

How to check and claim

  1. 01Read your PIP or DLA score sheet before you assume you are automatic
  2. 02Apply at gov.uk/apply-blue-badge in England, Scotland and Wales, or nidirect in Northern Ireland
  3. 03If refused, ask the council to reconsider with extra walking or risk evidence

FAQ

Does enhanced PIP mobility always mean a Blue Badge?
No. Enhanced mobility can be awarded for planning journeys without meeting England automatic descriptors. Read the points on your decision letter.
Is a Blue Badge the same as Motability?
No. Motability is a vehicle lease paid from qualifying mobility benefit. You can have one, both, or neither.
How long does a badge last?
Usually up to three years. Reapply before it expires. Fees are charged again unless your nation issues free badges.
