How to check if your vehicle is compliant
Use the official vehicle checker on gov.uk or Transport for London's site by entering your registration number. Do not rely on car age alone — some older cars were built to later standards and some newer imports are non-compliant.
Petrol hybrids and plug-in hybrids are compliant if they meet the petrol Euro standard. Fully electric vehicles are generally compliant because they produce no tailpipe emissions.
If you are buying a car for city driving, verify compliance before you purchase — a cheap older diesel may cost more in daily charges than a slightly pricier compliant petrol car.
London ULEZ and other zones
London's ULEZ covers most roads within the Greater London boundary. The daily charge applies from midnight to midnight if your vehicle does not meet standards. Payment is via TfL's website, app or auto-pay — late payment risks penalties.
Birmingham, Bristol, Bradford, Sheffield and other cities run clean air zones or similar schemes with their own boundaries, charge levels and exemption lists. Scottish LEZ schemes in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee apply to diesel cars that do not meet Euro 6 standards.
Signs mark zone entry points. Satellite navigation does not always show CAZ boundaries — check maps on official websites before unfamiliar journeys.
Reducing costs and planning trips
Park outside the zone and use public transport for the final leg if you only occasionally visit city centres. Some Park & Ride sites sit outside charging areas.
If you must drive a non-compliant vehicle regularly, compare the annual charge total against upgrading your car or using a car club with compliant vehicles.
Motorcycles and mopeds have separate rules in London — many meet ULEZ standards but check your registration.

Do I pay both ULEZ and the Congestion Charge?
Central London trips may attract both the Congestion Charge and ULEZ if you enter both zones in a non-compliant or chargeable vehicle. They are separate fees.
What if I forget to pay?
Pay as soon as possible — penalties increase over time. TfL and other authorities offer limited grace periods but do not rely on them.
Are residents discounted?
London offered a residents' grace period for non-compliant vehicles registered at addresses inside the zone — check TfL for current transitional rules as policies change.
