Maintenance grant replacement explained

Quick answer: Maintenance grants for English undergraduates ended in 2016 — replaced by larger maintenance loans, meaning poorer students graduate with more debt though repayments remain income-linked.

Maintenance grants for English undergraduates ended in 2016 and were replaced by larger maintenance loans. Welsh students still receive a partial grant. This guide explains current maintenance support in England and how it differs elsewhere in the UK.

Means testing

Maintenance loan amounts are means-tested on parental income for students under 25. Students aged 25 or over are assessed on their own income and partner's income if applicable.

Students estranged from parents may access limited non-repayable bursaries from universities. Student Finance England has an estrangement process for those without parental support.

Debt implications

Maximum maintenance plus tuition loans can exceed £50,000 in total debt. Under Plan 5, you repay 9% above the threshold regardless of the headline balance.

Higher debt does not automatically mean higher monthly repayments. The income threshold and write-off date matter more than the total amount borrowed.

Extra help

University hardship funds, scholarships and part-time work fill gaps that grants once covered. Apply early to bursary offices as funds are limited each year.

Disabled Students' Allowance is non-repayable and covers equipment and support costs. It is separate from the maintenance loan and does not count as income for means-tested benefits.

Common questions

Will grants return in England?

There are no current plans to restore maintenance grants in England. Welsh students still receive partial grants alongside reduced loans.

Does parental income always reduce loan?

Means testing applies to students under 25 living with or financially dependent on parents. Independent students are assessed on their own household income instead.

Can I appeal maintenance loan amount?

Ask Student Finance England to review your award if parental income has dropped significantly since the assessment year used for your application. Provide evidence such as P60s or tax returns to support a reassessment.
