Notice savings accounts explained

Where a link is marked *, it is a partner link — we receive commission at no extra cost to you. Links without a * earn us nothing. How we make money.

Quick answer: Notice accounts pay higher interest than easy access but require advance warning — typically 30 to 120 days — before you can withdraw without penalty.

UK savers use notice accounts to earn more while keeping some flexibility. They are covered by FSCS when offered by authorised banks. This guide compares notice periods and rates.

How notice works

You give notice through online banking or in writing. Once the period ends, funds move to your linked current account on the settlement date.

Some accounts allow partial withdrawals after notice on part of the balance — check terms before depositing large sums. Not all notice accounts offer partial access, so read the terms carefully.

Comparing to fixed bonds

Fixed bonds lock money for a set term with no early access. Notice accounts suit people who might need cash but can plan ahead by 60–90 days.

If you know the exact date you need money, a fixed bond matching that date may pay more. Fixed bonds lock the rate for the full term, while notice accounts keep variable rates.

Tax on interest

Interest is taxable unless covered by the personal savings allowance or held in ISAs. Banks may pay gross or net depending on your tax status.

Higher-rate taxpayers often need to report interest through Self Assessment if not collected via PAYE. The personal savings allowance covers only £500 of interest for higher-rate taxpayers.

Common questions

Can I withdraw without giving notice?

Usually yes but with an interest penalty — sometimes losing 30–90 days of interest on the withdrawn amount.

Are notice accounts covered by FSCS?

Yes, when offered by UK authorised deposit-takers up to the standard limit.

Do rates change on notice accounts?

Providers can change variable rates with notice — watch statements and switch if better deals appear elsewhere.
