Quick answer: The normal minimum pension age in the UK is 55, rising to 57 from April 2028 — you usually cannot access defined contribution pension pots before then except in ill-health or protected cases.
Access age rules affect retirement planning, especially for FIRE strategies and redundancy. HMRC sets the minimum age for most personal and workplace pensions. This guide explains the timetable and exceptions.

Timeline to 57
From 6 April 2028, new withdrawals from DC pensions generally require age 57 unless you have protection. Plan bridge funding for any gap between stopping work and pension access.
Those born after April 1973 are most affected — they will reach 55 after the rule change date. They will need to wait until 57 to access defined contribution pensions unless they have protected access.
Protected pension ages
Schemes that offered age 55 in their rules before 4 November 2021 may keep it for existing members if they meet HMRC conditions. Transfers can lose protection.
Check scheme documents before consolidating older pensions into a modern SIPP. Transferring can lose a protected pension age of 55 or enhanced tax-free cash above 25%.
Alternatives before access age
Use ISAs, cash savings or taxable investments for early retirement spending. Lifetime ISAs penalise other withdrawals before 60 except for first homes.
Occupational defined benefit pensions may have different normal retirement ages — often linked to state pension age. Early retirement from a DB scheme usually reduces the annual pension through actuarial factors.
Common questions
Can I access my pension at 50?
Not usually for DC pots unless you have scheme-specific protection or qualify for ill-health early access.
Does the state pension count?
State pension age is separate — currently 66–67 depending on date of birth — and is not accessible early except deferral choices.
What about overseas pensions?
QROPS and overseas transfers have separate rules — seek specialist guidance before moving UK pensions abroad.
