Second payments on account for 2025/26 are due 31 July 2026. Missing the date triggers interest from 1 August — use HMRC online services or request Time to Pay if you cannot pay in full.

Updated:

If your 2024/25 Self Assessment bill exceeded £1,000 after PAYE, you should have paid the first payment on account on 31 January 2026. The matching second instalment is due 31 July 2026.

Each payment is normally half of the prior year's bill unless you reduced payments on account with form SA303 because income will fall.

Pay through HMRC's online service, app or bank transfer using your UTR reference. Interest accrues from 1 August on unpaid amounts — penalties are lighter than January's filing penalty but costs add up.

Landlords, self-employed traders and higher earners with Child Benefit charges are among those most often caught out.

See our Self Assessment guides and side-hustle tax hub if you are newly registered.
