Quick answer: Van insurance must match how you use the vehicle — social domestic and pleasure, carriage of own goods, hire and reward (courier), or employer business use. Private van policies exclude paid delivery work; commercial use needs declared or claims may fail.
Vans are insured under motor policies with use-class declarations stricter than cars. Comparison sites quote on class of use, mileage and overnight parking. This hub explains cover types and common gaps — information only, not a product recommendation.

Classes of use
Social, domestic and pleasure (SDP) suits private van owners using the vehicle like a car — camping, hobbies, tip runs. Commuting may need SDP including commuting.
Carriage of own goods covers tradespeople carrying tools and materials between jobs — plumbers, electricians, builders.
Hire and reward covers paid delivery work — couriers, food delivery platforms. Premiums are higher; insurers may require business mileage estimates.
Cover levels and tools
Comprehensive covers accidental damage, fire, theft and vandalism to your van plus third-party liability. Third-party fire and theft is a middle tier.
Tools in transit may need a separate trade policy or van contents add-on — standard comprehensive limits per tool are often low.
Goods in transit insurance is separate from the van motor policy — it covers cargo you carry for others, not the vehicle itself.
Multi-van, young drivers and security
Fleet or multi-van policies suit businesses with several vehicles — one renewal date but each van may need its own use class.
Named drivers under 25 spike premiums. Black box/telematics van policies exist but are less common than for cars.
Thatcham-approved alarms, immobilisers and secure overnight parking reduce theft risk and may lower quotes.
Common questions
Can I use my car NCB on a van?
Some insurers accept car NCB on a private van policy; others start at zero. Ask before switching vehicle type.
Does platform delivery need hire and reward?
Yes if you are paid per delivery. SDP or own-goods classes usually exclude platform courier work.
Is lease van insurance different?
The lease company may require comprehensive cover and named finance interest. Gap insurance covers shortfall if the van is written off.
