GHIC and EHIC explained for UK travellers

Quick answer: The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives access to medically necessary state healthcare in the EU and some other countries at local resident rates — it is not a substitute for travel insurance. EHICs issued before Brexit may still work until expiry.

After Brexit, UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) were replaced by GHIC for most new applications. Understanding what GHIC covers — and what it does not — prevents costly gaps when travelling abroad.

What GHIC covers

GHIC lets you access state-provided healthcare during temporary stays in participating countries on the same basis as local insured residents — often low or no patient charge for necessary treatment.

Emergency A&E, GP visits for sudden illness and some prescribed medicines may be covered — elective treatment and private hospitals are not.

Each country runs its own system — you may need to pay upfront and claim back, or present the card at state facilities only.

What travel insurance adds

Travel insurance covers emergency medical costs where GHIC does not apply, plus repatriation to the UK, trip cancellation, baggage and personal liability.

Many insurers reduce the medical excess if you carry a valid GHIC — declare it when buying cover.

Adventure sports, cruises and USA/Canada trips need specific cover — GHIC does not apply in the US.

Applying and renewing

Apply free through NHS.uk — you need National Insurance number and passport details. Cards arrive by post within a few weeks.

GHIC covers the applicant only — each traveller including children needs their own card.

Renew before expiry; expired cards are not valid at border checks or hospitals.

Common questions

Is GHIC the same as EHIC?

For UK residents, GHIC replaced new EHIC applications after Brexit. Old EHICs work until expiry. Coverage scope is similar in EU countries but check participating nations.

Do I still need insurance with GHIC?

Yes — GHIC is not comprehensive travel insurance. It does not cover private treatment, repatriation or non-medical losses.

Does GHIC work for pre-existing conditions?

GHIC covers medically necessary care abroad regardless of pre-existing conditions in participating countries — but travel insurance may exclude them unless declared.
