In short. You can usually get New Style ESA if a health condition or disability limits how much you can work and you have paid enough National Insurance recently. Savings do not block it. If you do not meet the NI test, claim Universal Credit instead.
New Style ESA is contribution-based. It is not PIP and it is not the old income-related ESA. Many people claim it with Universal Credit. Confirm live rules on GOV.UK before you apply.

FAQ
- Do savings stop New Style ESA?
- No. Capital rules apply to Universal Credit, not to New Style ESA.
- Can I work at all?
- Permitted work rules allow some earnings. The 2026/27 weekly limit is £203.50. Check the live GOV.UK permitted-work page before you start a job.
- Is this the same as PIP?
- No. PIP is extra-costs money. ESA is income replacement when you cannot work as much. Many people get both.
