Home insulation grants: free and subsidised energy efficiency

Where a link is marked *, it is a partner link — we receive commission at no extra cost to you. Links without a * earn us nothing. How we make money.

Quick answer: UK homeowners and renters may qualify for free or subsidised insulation through the Great British Insulation Scheme, ECO4, or local council programmes. Loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, and draught-proofing can cut energy bills by hundreds of pounds a year.

Poor insulation is one of the biggest causes of high energy bills. The UK government and energy suppliers fund schemes to help households install insulation at reduced or no cost. Eligibility depends on your property type, income, and existing insulation levels.

Available schemes

Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS): targets homes in council tax bands A–D in England and A–E in Scotland and Wales with EPC rating D or below. Provides single insulation measures.

ECO4: the Energy Company Obligation funds free insulation and heating upgrades for low-income households and those in fuel poverty. Delivered through energy suppliers.

Types of insulation

Loft insulation: the cheapest and most effective measure. Installing 270mm of loft insulation can save £200+ per year.

Cavity wall insulation: fills the gap between inner and outer walls. Suitable for most homes built after 1920 with unfilled cavities.

Draught-proofing: sealing gaps around doors, windows, and floors. Low cost and can be done DIY.

How to apply

Check eligibility on GOV.UK or your energy supplier's website. For GBIS, contact your energy supplier directly. For ECO4, contact an approved installer.

Always use TrustMark-registered installers for government-funded work. Avoid cold-callers offering insulation — legitimate schemes do not require upfront payment.

Common questions

Can renters get insulation grants?

Yes, but landlord permission is required. Some schemes contact landlords directly. Insulation benefits the property, so most landlords agree.

How long does insulation last?

Loft insulation lasts 40+ years. Cavity wall insulation lasts 25+ years. Both require minimal maintenance.

Will insulation affect my EPC rating?

Yes. Loft and cavity wall insulation typically improve your EPC rating by one or two bands, which can increase property value and qualify you for green mortgage discounts.
