Emergency Assistance Payments help with immediate crises — no food, no heating, or essential items needed within days. Awards may be vouchers, direct payments or goods arranged by the scheme.
You typically need to be on a low income or receiving a qualifying benefit and demonstrate that the crisis is urgent and unexpected.
You cannot usually receive repeated emergency payments for the same crisis — the scheme expects you to stabilise your situation with ongoing benefits or budgeting help.
Individual Assistance Payment
Individual Assistance Payments help with essential household items — for example a cooker, fridge or bedding — when you are setting up home after homelessness, leaving care, or fleeing domestic abuse.
Eligibility is discretionary. You may need support from a professional referrer such as a housing officer, social worker or Citizens Advice adviser.
Awards are usually goods or vouchers rather than cash, arranged through approved suppliers.
How DAF fits with other Welsh help
Council Tax Reduction reduces your council tax bill year-round through your council — apply separately.
Universal Credit budgeting advances must be repaid through reduced UC payments — DAF grants do not.
Local councils may also run Household Support Fund schemes — check your council website alongside DAF if you face a one-off crisis.
