Can I pay more in over-50s premiums than the payout?

In short: Yes — if you live long enough, total premiums often exceed the fixed cash sum because over-50s plans are whole-of-life with level premiums. Insurers may cap total premiums at the sum assured or at age 90 on some products, after which cover continues without further payment.

Example: £20 monthly for £3,000 cover equals £240 a year — after 12.5 years you have paid £3,000 in premiums. Live to 85 having paid from age 60 and you may pay £72,000 total for a £3,000 payout unless a premium cap applies.
Premium cap products stop charging when premiums paid equal the sum assured — cover continues until death without further cost. These are materially better value for long-lived policyholders.
Inflation erodes the real value of fixed payouts — £5,000 bought meaningful funeral cover in 2010 but less so in 2026 unless you chose escalating benefits.
Compare with saving the same premium in an ISA — sometimes self-insuring funeral costs wins if you have discipline and health longevity. See over-50s life insurance explained.
