In short: Average comprehensive car insurance was roughly £635 a year in 2025 (ABI figures) — but young drivers often pay £1,500+ while experienced drivers in low-risk postcodes may pay under £300. Your price depends on age, car group, postcode and claims history.

Insurers price individually — averages hide huge spreads. Telematics policies can cut young-driver premiums 20–40%. Comprehensive cover is sometimes cheaper than third-party because of risk-pool effects.
Never auto-renew: compare 20–30 days before expiry. FCA rules stop renewal prices exceeding equivalent new-customer quotes, but shopping around still finds better matches for your risk profile.
