How much contents insurance do I need?

In short: Enough to replace everything you own at today's prices — walk room by room and total furniture, clothes, tech, carpets and valuables. Typical UK contents sums range from £20,000 to £80,000 depending on household size.

Underinsurance triggers average-clause reductions on claims. Overestimating wastes premium but is safer than guessing low.

High-value items may need named limits above the single-item cap — often £1,500–£2,500 per item on standard policies.

Students and tenants still need contents cover — landlord insurance does not cover your belongings.
