## Summary

Social, domestic and pleasure cover is not enough if you carry tools to job sites. Class of use, goods-in-transit limits and employer liability may all be needed — declare business use honestly or claims can be refused.

Van insurance mirrors car cover levels — third-party, third-party fire and theft, and comprehensive — but class of use drives price. Carriage of own goods, haulage and courier use are rated differently.

Tools left in vans overnight are a theft hotspot. Standard contents sections cap tool values — specialist tradesman policies or tool cover add-ons may be needed for £5,000+ kits.

If you employ anyone, employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement. Public liability covers injury to third parties; professional indemnity may apply for design or advisory work.

No-claims bonus from a car does not always transfer to a van — check with insurers. Multi-vehicle policies can bundle car and van cover on one renewal date.

Electric vans carry higher list prices and repair costs — premiums can exceed diesel equivalents. See our van insurance guide and compare car insurance hub for general comparison principles.
