## Summary

Energy suppliers may soon face binding enforcement when they ignore Ombudsman rulings — closing a long-standing gap in consumer protection.

The government is strengthening the Energy Ombudsman's ability to enforce decisions against energy suppliers when complaints are upheld. At present, most suppliers comply voluntarily, but gaps in enforcement have left some households waiting months for redress.

The change matters if you have an unresolved billing dispute, erroneous transfer, or failure to apply a promised credit. Continue complaining to your supplier first; after eight weeks, or if you receive a deadlock letter, escalate to the Energy Ombudsman free of charge.

Keep meter readings, emails and reference numbers. If you are in vulnerable circumstances, ask to be added to your supplier's Priority Services Register while the complaint is open.

The Money Guide bills & utilities guide explains how to complain and when to escalate.
