# DVLA: car and motorcycle drivers can report medical conditions online

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency expanded its online medical service on 17 August 2026 so holders of car and motorcycle licences can check how around 1,600 health conditions may affect driving and, where the rules require it, notify DVLA without posting a paper pack. DVLA says some online applications are processed up to 10 days faster than paper, with the first action — such as referring the case to a healthcare professional — sometimes within 24 hours. The service runs 24 hours a day, lets drivers report more than one condition in a session, track progress, renew a medical driving licence, and renew the photocard at the same time. More than 60,000 drivers had already used the enhanced service; digital uptake rose almost 50% over the previous year, and users have avoided tens of thousands of pounds in postage.

You still must tell DVLA if you develop a notifiable condition or one that has got worse. Notifiable means anything that could affect safe driving. You can be fined up to £1,000 for not telling DVLA, and you can be prosecuted after an accident. Telling DVLA does not tell your motor insurer — non-disclosure on a policy can void a claim.

Bus, coach and lorry licence holders still send the condition-specific paper form. Northern Ireland uses the Driver and Vehicle Agency, not DVLA. Online medical notify on age-70 renewals, first provisional applications, and previously surrendered or revoked licences is planned later in 2026; until then, declare conditions on the form you are already completing.
