## Quick answer

Ask your employer about Statutory Maternity Pay first; if you do not qualify, apply for Maternity Allowance from 26 weeks pregnant with form MA1, your MATB1 and proof of work or self-employment.

Maternity Allowance is paid by DWP when SMP rules are not met. The standard 2026/27 rate is £194.32 a week or 90% of average weekly earnings, whichever is less, for up to 39 weeks.

## Steps

### 1. Check Statutory Maternity Pay first

SMP needs 26 weeks’ continuous employment by the 15th week before the due date and average weekly earnings of at least £129 (2026/27 Lower Earnings Limit). If both tests are met, your employer pays SMP — use the [SMP calculator](/tools/statutory-maternity-pay-calculator/).

### 2. Get form MA1 and your MATB1

Apply from 26 weeks pregnant. Download MA1 from GOV.UK or request a pack. Your midwife or doctor issues the MATB1 around week 20.

### 3. Prove work or self-employment

Employed people send payslips or a P60. Self-employed people usually need Class 2 NI in the 66 weeks before the due date for the full rate. Unpaid work in a spouse’s business can qualify for a lower 14-week rate.

### 4. Choose when pay starts

Payments can start any time from 11 weeks before the due date to the day after the birth. Tell DWP if you work in that period. Maternity Allowance is taxable and counts as income for Universal Credit.

### 5. Keep a copy and report changes

Report a change of address, work or if the baby is born early. If DWP refuses, ask them to look again. Full explainer: [Maternity Allowance](/work-earnings/maternity-allowance-explained/).

## Common pitfalls

- Applying for Maternity Allowance when you actually qualify for SMP — ask payroll first
- Missing Class 2 NI as a self-employed parent and assuming the full rate
- Forgetting Maternity Allowance is income for Universal Credit
