## Quick answer

UK credit reference agencies — Experian, Equifax and TransUnion — hold data lenders use to score you; you can check statutory reports for free and dispute errors.

Lenders share account performance with agencies monthly. Your file affects mortgage, card and mobile contract approvals. This guide explains what appears on your file and your rights to check and challenge it.

## Key facts

- Three main UK agencies may hold slightly different data — check all if rejected for credit
- Statutory credit reports are free direct from each agency under data protection law — third-party apps also offer free access
- Hard searches stay visible about 12 months; defaults six years
- You can add a notice of correction to explain special circumstances on your file

## What appears on files

Your credit file lists open and closed credit accounts, payment history, electoral roll registration, county court judgments and insolvency records. Lenders use this data to assess how reliably you have managed borrowing in the past.

Financial associations created by joint accounts or mortgages link your file to another person's credit history. A partner's poor record can affect your applications even if you have never missed a payment yourself.

## Checking regularly

Free third-party services and direct agency portals show agency-specific scores. These are indicative guides only and are not identical to the internal scores each lender calculates.

Before applying for a mortgage or major credit, check all three main agencies for errors such as wrong addresses or settled defaults still showing as open. Catching mistakes early avoids unnecessary rejections.

## Disputes

Contact the lender first if an account detail is wrong, because they supply the data agencies hold. Credit reference agencies must investigate disputes within eight weeks under consumer credit rules.

If you suspect identity theft, add a fraud alert or Cifas protective registration to warn lenders before new accounts are opened in your name. Act quickly and keep copies of every letter you send.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which agency do lenders use?

Different lenders use different agencies, and some check more than one. There is no universal UK credit score that covers every application, which is why checking all three files matters.

### Do soft checks affect score?

Soft searches are visible to you on your file but are not usually used in credit scoring. Hard searches from formal applications can temporarily reduce your score, so avoid too many in a short period.

### Can I remove a default early?

A default can only be removed early if it was recorded in error or you negotiated a partial settlement marking with the lender. Otherwise it stays on your file for six years from the date of satisfaction.
