# Mobile social tariffs UK: cheap phone plans on benefits

## Quick answer

## Who qualifies

Rules vary by network but commonly include Universal Credit, Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit), Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and sometimes PIP or Carer's Allowance.

Most providers verify eligibility through DWP records with your permission, or by asking for a recent benefit award letter. You may need to reconfirm eligibility periodically.

## What you get

Plans typically include unlimited calls and texts plus 5GB–30GB data — enough for messaging, banking and light streaming. They are SIM-only: use your existing handset or buy an unlocked phone separately.

Social tariffs are not marketed on main shop pages. Search the provider's social tariff page or ask customer services directly — mention Ofcom's social tariff list if staff are unsure.

## How to switch

Ask your current provider first whether they offer a social tariff. Some waive early-exit fees when moving onto or between social tariffs mid-contract.

To keep your number, request a PAC code and port to the social tariff provider. Switching usually completes within one working day.

### Can I have mobile and broadband social tariffs?

Yes. They are independent products. Many low-income households benefit from both if they use home Wi-Fi and mobile data.

### Do social tariffs affect Universal Credit?

The tariff is a bill you pay — it does not count as income. Lower phone costs may help you budget but do not change UC entitlement directly.

### What if no network offers a social tariff in my area?

Coverage is national for major networks but not every brand participates. Check Ofcom's list and consider a low-cost SIM-only deal from a participating MVNO if your main network has no offer.
