In England it costs up to £10, in Scotland up to £20, in Wales it is free, and in Northern Ireland it is £10. Badges usually last up to three years. Some PIP, DLA and Child Disability Payment mobility awards qualify automatically; others are assessed by the council. GOV.UK’s ‘who can get a Blue Badge’ list includes higher-rate DLA mobility, Child Disability Payment higher-rate mobility, registered severe sight impairment, some armed-forces payments, and specified PIP mobility scores. In England, 8 or more points for ‘moving around’ (cannot walk more than 50 metres) is automatic. So is 10 points specifically for descriptor E on planning and following journeys. A higher score of 12 on planning journeys for a different descriptor does not automatically qualify in England — you still apply with evidence of very considerable difficulty walking or serious risk. Scotland and Wales use slightly different automatic PIP/ADP score combinations — check mygov.scot or your Welsh council. ## How do I apply? Apply online for England, Scotland and Wales via GOV.UK. Northern Ireland has a separate nidirect process. You need a head-and-shoulders photo, proof of identity and address, and benefit proof if you have it. From April 2025 many English councils check PIP through DWP Searchlight instead of asking you to upload the whole award letter. Councils usually decide within 12 weeks. If refused, ask them to reconsider with extra evidence. Children under 3 can qualify if they always need bulky medical equipment or must stay near a vehicle for treatment. ## Frequently asked questions ### Does enhanced PIP mobility always mean a Blue Badge? No. Enhanced mobility can be awarded for planning journeys without meeting the automatic England descriptors. Read your score sheet.
