# Who can claim Child Benefit in the UK?

## In short

Anyone responsible for a child under 16, or under 20 in approved education or training. One claimant per household receives payment — often the lower earner to preserve National Insurance credits.

You do not need to be the parent — grandparents or guardians may qualify if the child lives with them.

Child Benefit is not means-tested but High Income Child Benefit Charge may apply above £60,000 income.
