## In short

The days after policy start before cover begins — typically 10–14 days for illness and 24–48 hours for accidents. Any condition arising during the waiting period is treated as pre-existing and excluded.

Insure before symptoms appear — switching after diagnosis locks out cover.

Some insurers offer shorter accident-only waiting periods.
