# What is pet insurance excess?

## In short

The amount you pay towards a vet bill before the insurer pays the rest — set per claim or per condition per year. Higher voluntary excess lowers premium but raises your cost at the vet.

Some policies also charge a co-payment percentage on top of excess for older pets.

Windscreen-style separate excesses are uncommon — check policy wording for dental and behavioural cover.
