## In short

Guarantee Credit tops up weekly income for people over State Pension age to a minimum level set by the government. For 2026/27, the standard minimum is around £227 a week for a single person and £347 for a couple — check gov.uk for the exact uprated figures.

Pension Credit has two parts. Guarantee Credit is the core element: if your weekly income (including State Pension and most other income) falls below the government's minimum guarantee, Pension Credit makes up the difference. The minimum amounts are uprated each April. For 2026/27, indicative figures are roughly £227 a week for a single person and £347 for a couple, but always confirm the live rates on gov.uk.

Savings above £10,000 are assumed to generate income when calculating entitlement — £1 a week for every £500 (or part of £500) above that threshold. Your home is ignored, but other assets and most income count. Claiming Guarantee Credit unlocks other help, including Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Cold Weather Payments, and a free TV Licence if you are aged 75 or over.

Roughly one in three eligible pensioner households do not claim. You can apply up to four months before reaching State Pension age, and claims can be backdated by up to three months. Use the Pension Credit calculator on gov.uk before assuming you are not entitled — many homeowners and people with small private pensions still qualify.
