# What is a BNPL affordability check?

## In short

Since May 2026 BNPL providers must assess whether you can afford repayments before lending — similar to other regulated consumer credit. They may ask about income, existing BNPL plans and credit commitments.

Failed affordability checks should result in declined checkout offers rather than unaffordable lending.

You can complain to the provider or Financial Ombudsman Service if you believe checks were inadequate.

Stacking several BNPL plans remains risky even if each passes individually — budget the combined monthly total.
