# What is Adult Disability Payment (ADP) in Scotland?

Adult Disability Payment is Scotland's replacement for Personal Independence Payment — same daily living and mobility components and rates, but administered by Social Security Scotland rather than DWP.

Adult Disability Payment (ADP) is paid to working-age adults in Scotland who need help with daily living or mobility because of a long-term health condition or disability. It replaced PIP for new claims from August 2022 and existing PIP claimants are transferred automatically.

ADP has the same structure as PIP: daily living and mobility components, each at a standard or enhanced weekly rate. Amounts are uprated each April in line with PIP. The benefit is tax-free, not means-tested, and ignored for the benefit cap.

Social Security Scotland runs a more claimant-centred process than DWP — decisions are often made on application forms and supporting evidence without a face-to-face medical assessment, and there is a mandatory internal review before tribunal appeal.

If you live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, you claim PIP through DWP instead. Moving between Scotland and the rest of the UK triggers a transfer between ADP and PIP with continuity rules to avoid payment gaps.
