# What happens to Disability Living Allowance when my child turns 16?

## In short

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland they must claim Personal Independence Payment. DWP sends an invitation shortly after the 16th birthday. Start the PIP claim by the date on the letter or DLA stops. Scotland moves from Child Disability Payment to Adult Disability Payment, not PIP.

If they claim PIP on time, DLA continues until the PIP decision. Miss the date and DLA stops; DWP usually offers a second 28-day window. PIP is a different points test — the old DLA rate is not copied across.
