## In short

Executors carry out your will: gather assets, pay debts, tax and funeral costs, then distribute what is left. Name people you trust in your [will](https://swiftwill.co.uk/) — usually one to four — and ask them before you sign.

After death, executors locate the original will, apply for probate when needed, collect money and property, settle liabilities (including Inheritance Tax if due), and pass gifts and the residue to the beneficiaries named in the will. The job involves paperwork and responsibility, so choose organised adults who are likely to outlive you.

You only need one executor, but naming two or more is safer if one cannot act. If any beneficiary is under 18 or the will creates a trust, you normally need at least two. Executors can also be beneficiaries. Always check they are willing — someone named can refuse.

For a straightforward England and Wales estate, [make a will online](https://swiftwill.co.uk/) with SwiftWill from around £35 (or £55 for [mirror wills](https://swiftwill.co.uk/mirror-wills/)) and name your executors in the questionnaire.
