# How do I compare car insurance in the UK?

## In short

Match cover level, excess, mileage, named drivers and add-ons across quotes — quote 20–30 days before renewal on comparison sites and direct insurers. Third-party is not always cheaper than comprehensive.

Use at least one FCA-regulated comparison site and check insurers not on panels. Soft searches do not affect credit score until you buy.

Include courtesy car, legal cover and protected no-claims bonus in like-for-like comparisons.
