# How do I apply for Child Benefit?

## In short

Claim online at gov.uk/child-benefit or complete form CH2. You need the child's birth certificate (or adoption papers) and bank details. Backdating is usually up to three months — apply soon after birth.

Register the birth first — you need the birth certificate reference.

If you opt out of payments due to HICBC, you can still register for NI credits.
