## In short

Higher rate: up to £3,500 lump sum plus up to £350 a month for 18 months. Standard rate: up to £2,500 lump sum plus up to £100 a month for 18 months. Claim within three months of death for the full amounts.

Payments are tax-free. The lump sum arrives first; monthly payments follow for up to 18 months unless you reach State Pension age during that period.

Late claims after three months may receive reduced lump sums. Monthly amounts may also be lower.

Bereavement Support Payment is separate from inheriting a partner's State Pension or workplace death benefits.
