# How do I claim Personal Independence Payment (PIP)?

## In short

Start a PIP claim by calling 0800 917 2222 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm) or check whether you can apply online in your postcode. That start date is usually your claim date. You then complete ‘How your disability affects you’ and, in most cases, have a health assessment. Scotland uses Adult Disability Payment instead.

PIP is for people aged 16 to State Pension age in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. You do not need to be out of work. Official start: https://www.gov.uk/pip/how-to-claim. If you live in Scotland, claim Adult Disability Payment from Social Security Scotland.

Have your National Insurance number, bank details, GP details and dates in hospital or abroad ready. After the phone start you get the questionnaire. Write what you cannot do safely, repeatedly, to an acceptable standard and in a reasonable time on most days. Keep a copy.
