# Do broadband social tariffs have exit fees?

## In short

Usually not when switching onto, between, or off a social tariff while on qualifying benefits. Most major providers waive early-exit fees for eligible customers moving to their social tariff or switching to another provider's social tariff. Standard contracts still have exit fees if you leave for a non-social deal before the minimum term ends.

Broadband social tariffs are discounted packages — typically £10–£25 a month — for households on Universal Credit, Pension Credit and certain other benefits. Because they are designed for low-income customers, most major providers (including BT, Sky, Virgin Media, Vodafone and Hyperoptic) commit to waiving early-termination charges when an eligible customer moves onto their social tariff mid-contract.

The same waiver usually applies when switching from one provider's social tariff to another's, as long as you remain eligible and the new package is a recognised social tariff. Ofcom publishes a current list of qualifying products. Tell the new provider you are switching under social-tariff rules and provide proof of benefit entitlement.

Moving off a social tariff onto a standard full-price deal before your minimum term ends may trigger normal early-exit fees, depending on the provider's terms. If your financial situation improves and you no longer qualify, ask the provider what happens — some allow a move to a standard plan without penalty, others treat it as breaking the contract.

Social tariffs themselves are typically rolling or short fixed terms with no lengthy lock-in. If you lose benefit entitlement, you may need to move to a standard tariff at a higher price. Use the One Touch Switch process to change providers; the switch should complete within ten working days and your landline number can usually be ported for free.
